Company Culture is it Important?

The term Culture is a rather fluffy term, that can be described manyfold and is different from company to company. Some evolve and others are intentionally created. Fact is that leaders often do not take into account the importance that this element does have.

What some people say about it

To give you a better idea rather than just a definition, here are some good quotes from the blog post 37 Company Culture Quotes That Will Inspire Your Team by Cassie Patton.

The most relevant from the list in my opinion are these for any entrepreneur and business:

“Corporate culture is the only sustainable competitive advantage that is completely within the control of the entrepreneur.”

– David Cummings, Co-Founder, Pardot

“There’s no magic formula for great company culture. The key is just to treat your staff how you would like to be treated.”

– Richard Branson, Founder, Virgin Group

“Shaping your culture is more than half done when you hire your team.”

– Jessica Herrin, Founder, Stella & Dot

Strategy & company performance

Also to highlight the importance even more, yesterday I read an interesting post by Ferhat Demir on Linkedin where he wrote about designing strategy driven businesses. In his article he makes a point about the elements, which are crucial to be considered and the one which is most critical to develop and include, Culture.

Here is a link to his article and a link to another that is interesting too, because it lists several studies about the importance of company culture in businesses and the positive impact they have. The 7 studies that the author lists are from companies like Bain & Company, Deloitte and other institutions and journals.

Thanks to the authors for the interesting articles and sources of information!!

Leaders potential to shape

I once read that a company becomes the extension of an entrepreneur. I do not remember where I read it, but he or she brand so to say the venture. I totally agree with this statement. From experience I can say that the it is true.

In addition to this and in line with the third quote I have listed above, the founders as well as the other members of the initial team shape the structure, processes and systems that influence the internal atmosphere and attitudes of people. So if you are an entrepreneur, think of how your actions and choice of team may influence the long term Culture.

Another thing that I have also seen and found interesting is that it is possible to find different cultures in the same company. Subcultures so to say, these I think result most of the time either from the people in charge or even specific respected individuals not necessarily in direct management positions. Such people have an impact on Culture with their values and actions and set the example.

To me most of the times a company culture is the result of the values and ethics from the people who lead by example so to say. As the saying goes “you reap what you sow.” To give you one example of this, if you want people to work autonomously and think on their own feet and act, you have to teach how to think, give them freedom to explore, trust and the right to make mistakes, otherwise you will always have to look over everything and this is will not be possible once the company starts growing.

Some ending thoughts

Companies are made of people. It all starts with people and ends with people. Whether you want to create a company or you want to run an established one you have to work through people to achieve goals. If you aim to create lasting change the same applies to any area inside and outside a business.

The need to understand the Culture one wants or which already exists are essential to be able to achieve any specific goal. If an existing Culture does not suit the objective one needs to understand how the other elements like Structure, Systems, Strategy and Leadership affect it, and if necessary change them correspondingly

What do you think? Do you think that you affect the company Culture in your position? What is it that you consider the most important element within your company’s Culture? I would be curious to hear your thoughts about it.

Worrisome but achievable in my eyes.

Dependent however on everybodies interest in the matter. In my eyes it is like with everything, if one wants change to happen we should lead by example, and consider for example the elements of our daily life.

The question being, how to change our habits accordingly to reach the goal on an individual base for a start.

Give it some thought.

A good read: Being a Successful Entrepreneur Isn’t Only About Having the Best Ideas

The other day I read this article: Being a Successful Entrepreneur Isn’t Only About Having the Best Ideas

I think it is a good read for anyone with an idea he thinks is viable.

“…without the capacity to execute an idea — to take an idea and turn it into a living, breathing, viable organization — you’re doomed to fail.”

Blogging: Should I?

Blogging: Should I?

I guess this is something some of us wonder. Is it worth the effort? The time?

Fair questions but something you should look into if you are serious about creating your own personal brand.

I have a tendency to be a perfeccionist but I think that some things you need to get your hands dirty with to get better and learn by doing, and it seems to me that blogginf falls into this category.

This article may encourage some to start doing it instead of over doing it and spending too much time on preparation and start creating content and sharing your thoughts, interests, etc.

Give it a read and maybe you will find it interesting too.

Online Teamwork Tools: Trello, Slack and Google Suite Apps

About two months ago I initiated a team with two others to work on some ideas. I did some research on web based applications and finally I decided to use Trello, Slack and combine them with Google’s apps. I wanted something free, that could be combined with each other, easy to use and with mobile app support.

Trello

The developers define it as a visual project collaboration tool that lets the user organize everything in the form of boards filled with lists. Its free plan is what I have used so far and I have found it very useful and simple to use. It lets you easily create private boards as well as team boards to which you can add members. Once you are on a board you create lists which you fill with so called cards. All these can be arranged and moved around on the board from one list to another or to another board, copied, deleted, etc. It is pretty straightforward and other options are available through the menu on the right. The configuration and set-up is easy and you can download mobile apps for the different operating systems to collaborate on the go.

Here are some screenshots to give you an idea.

Slack

It is a team collaboration tool, focused on easing communication by letting you create different chat rooms per topic and add easily links, files, etc. It can be integrated with other third party applications like Trello, Google Drive, Box, Dropbox, etc. Its contents is searchable and filters can be applied. The configuration and set-up is easy and you can download mobile apps for the different operating systems to collaborate on the go. You also have the possibility to make individual or group calls, the latter however are not free.

Here are some screenshots to give you an idea.

Google apps

They are the free online office applications set by Google. I had not used them much before but after having them used for team projects I have come to appreciate them. You have the standard offering of the paid Microsoft version for office. The whole range works well, it takes a little to get used to them. If you switch over to them from lets say Word or Excel you will possibly have no problem if you are a basic user. If you are a poweruser, however you will have to go and do for example some reading for sheets and customize it to suit your workflow.

When it comes to same time online collaboration the apps are impressive since all the team members can be connected at the same time after they have been granted access to the file or folder. One note though is that al will need a gmail account and to have a good internet connection.

Here is a screenshot to give you an idea of the range of cloud apps that can be handy to use.

Here is a link to the Google Suite learning center where you will find all the necessary information.

Also here are some reviews on some of the Google solutions:

Why use them?

Simply stated they are efficient and free, if you are on a tight budget or just do not feel like you want to pay for the software you want to use they are a good start to get going with teamwork.

Just give them a shot, they are free! You have got nothing to loose!

Let me know if you found this useful or whether you are using other tools for online collaboration.

Why not participate in a competition for new ideas or products?

Recently I heard through Facebook about a competition held by Clas Ohlson for new sustainable living products that they would incorporate into their offering

I thought about it and told myself why not take part?

Well I got in touch with some friends of mine and we are now looking for ideas.

How about you why don’t you give it a shot too. Its fun and interesting besides it can lead to great things, like maybe a new business idea. So what is holding you back, you have got nothing to loose and all to gain!

5 Common Excuses for not Doing a Business Plan

5 Excuses for not doing a business plan you can avoid!

I have often been presented with business ideas for which no serious business plan had been prepared for. When I asked whether they had done a business plan, the excuses I most often got were almost always the same. If any of these sounds familiar, let me walk you through as to why you do need a plan and refer you to some other useful articles and resources.

5 Excuses for not doing a business plan picture

The Excuses

1. “I am an expert, I got a great idea, I got contacts, etc …”

It is possible that everything is true and that you are all set up for success, but I know from experience that sometimes too much confidence can be the greatest blindfold. Continue reading

Tips to be creative

Tips to be creative

Are you creative or can you be creative?

I have met people who say that they are not creative. They accept things as given and do not even try to be. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy so to say. They will never come up with a bright idea because they do not consider even having one.

Ironically there are others, who when confronted with a problem, do not step back but step forward. They do not accept the status quo and give it a shot. They think of finding a solution and the fear of ridicule and failure is secondary. Some of the greatest inventors had hundreds of ideas before they came up with one bright one. This group creates the other stagnates.

What’s the difference between the two? — Their mindset.

“Think left and think right and think low and think high. Oh, the thinks you can think up if only you try” – Dr. Seuss

Creativity is just another skill

I have always been considered creative by others. In school it was because I was good at drawing and later at work, it was because I came up with solutions. Continue reading
